Music session

I co-run a music session in Coventry's most wonderful pub "Whitefriars" – a 15th Century building with great beer and atmosphere. We welcome any traditional musicians and try to keep a balance of English, Irish and other music, and enjoy anything else that turns up too! Just come along any Monday evening from about 8.30.

I play anglo concertinas and harps [www.norrisharps.com] and [www.thomharps.com.au] but just about anything is welcome!

Traditional Music

I was brought up hearing traditional songs and music. I am no singer, so I picked up my father's instrument, the concertina.

Sadly in Coventry, virtually all the music sessions play mostly Irish music, so I play that much more than English tunes, which being English feels a bit wrong.

If you are interested in Irish Music, I'd suggest starting with either The Bothy Band or Planxty. They are bands that wrote the rules for everything else. I think Moving Hearts' "The Storm" was the next big step forwards, but I have found myself listening more to solo musicians like Mick O'Brien, Noel Hill and Paddy Keenan.
